Mar 23, 2022

Persevering with its onerous lean into the multiverse, D&D has introduced one other sourcebook primed to be tailored into current official and homebrewed campaigns (or run as its personal long-form journey) that introduces (a minimum of) three new settings.

Journeys By way of the Radiant Citadel options 14 quick(ish) adventures, roughly one per character stage (as much as Lv 14), all set in numerous areas of those new realms or throughout the titular metropolis. The Citadel itself is alleged to exist solely on the Ethereal Aircraft, the ‘world between worlds’ in D&D canon, which sits “eternally one step from actuality,” based on D&D’s Senior Designer Wes Schneider. Carved out of a single bone from a large long-dead creature, the Citadel has been designed to be a much less “conventional” D&D metropolis than these like Baldur’s Gate or Waterdeep.

“The Radiant Citadel is ‘The Metropolis of Tales and Sanctuary,'” explains Ajit George, the co-Lead Designer on Journeys. “It is a crossroad metropolis, one which welcomes all in want and of fine intent … Once I conceived of it and constructed it, I wished to be distinctly totally different from different D&D cities. And so the Radiant Citadel will not be a spot of backstabbing and lurking monsters and crime, simply across the nook. As an alternative, the Radiant Citadel was meant to provide gamers an actual dwelling. A respite. A spot to regroup and rebuild after dealing with the worst, most tragic challenges. Particularly in right now’s [real-world] day and age, I actually wished to provide them a spot of hope. A spot that will really feel good to come back again to.”

That spirit of sanctuary and camaraderie is one which the D&D crew has been concentrating on for its gamers and the worlds they probe for a number of years now. Whether or not wanting on the new character choices in books like Tasha’s Cauldron of All the things or rule tweaks just like the elimination of alignment from most creatures in the upcoming Monsters of the Multiverse, it is clear that the crew is working to make the gaming desk an area that welcomes folks of all identities to play whoever they need.

“It was actually thrilling to get an opportunity to succeed in again to my household’s personal previous and legacy.

Journeys By way of the Radiant Citadel, along with offering new settings, characters, and journey prompts, seeks to increase that inclusivity to its new realms, which take inspiration from cultures all through historical past and throughout the globe.

“It’s one thing that we now have not seen in D&D earlier than,” George says. “A primary of its sort … a D&D e book totally written by Black and Brown writers, writing to their very own histories, their backgrounds, their cultures.” He is fast to make clear, although, that gamers should not anticipate formal historical past classes from JTtRC. “These are impressed, however they are not a one-for-one analogy or analog to real-world cultures,” he says. “They’re simply taking inspiration, components, tales which can be a part of their households, a part of their lived experiences.”

A few of these inspirations end in components of the Radiant Citadel itself, whereas others weave totally new areas. “[The realm of Godsbreath] is actually my simply private love letter, my homage, to the Black expertise within the southern United States,” explains author Erin Roberts, writer of the Third-level journey ‘Written in Blood’. “There’s so much there, and I simply wished to provide type of a little bit trace of it, nevertheless it was actually thrilling to me to get an opportunity to succeed in again to my household’s personal previous and legacy in Mississippi and Florida and Georgia.”

The journey actually takes a darker tone than some others within the anthology, with a group below siege from an unknown supernatural menace, however Roberts says it is not meant to be all doom and gloom. “It is actually, very nice to see type of a renaissance in Black Southern Gothic horror,” she says. “However one of many thrilling issues is that [in modern media like Lovecraft Country] loads of these are very centered in the true historical past of this nation, and it is a little bit off to the facet. So it has loads of the essence of the group and the enjoyment, however with out a few of the oppression that you just see in a few of these works … It is nonetheless obtained that southern vibe of fine houses and good meals and good group, and a few creepiness within the nook.”

“I actually could not be extra pleased with what we have completed collectively.”

Journeys by means of the Radiant Citadel feautres gazetteers and guides for all the brand new areas, in addition to new characters, monsters, NPCs, and extra. Journey themes fluctuate – Written in Blood is a bit on the horror/thriller facet, whereas others give attention to extra comedic themes or tense political intrigue. The credit for the e book are a bevy of different noteworthy creators, too, together with Felice Tzehuei Kuan (Life is Unusual), Miyuki Jane Pinckard, Justice Ramin Arman (Beadle & Grimm’s), Surena Marie (a part of the Important Position crew), sci-fi/fantasy writer Mimi Mondal, Mario Ortegón (Hunter: The Reckoning TRPG), Stephanie Yoon, and many extra. “I actually could not be extra pleased with what we have completed collectively,” George says. “I really like this e book deeply, and I believe it is a piece of magic.”
